THE TALK: AN OVERVIEW


Helander’s Pioneering Impact on Human Factors and Ergonomics – from comfort and affective design to work ergonomics and services.

The talk highlights the pioneering efforts of the late Martin Helander from 1969 to 2023, as seen from the lens of his dedicated colleagues, who are academics and practitioners in human factors and ergonomics.


Helander taught at SUNY Buffalo, USA from 1986 to 1994, after Luleå University in Sweden. Together with Prof. Colin Drury they mentored PhD students to investigate comfort issues related to chair design. After all, ergonomics then was known as “chair ergonomics”. They both shared several publications exploring the dimensions of comfort. In his talk, Drury will examine theories of comfort and measures validated to predict and/or measure comfort outcomes for any new design. He will also discuss comfort in patient outcomes, and management’s idea of comfort zones.
